Today we're looking at the new 860 EVO to see how Samsung improved on the world's best-selling SSD. The newest edition to the world's best-selling SATA SSD series, the Samsung 860 EVO. Specially designed for mainstream PCs and laptops, with the latest V-NAND and a robust algorithm-based controller, this fast and reliable SSD comes in a wide range of compatible form factors and capacities. The 860 EVO comes equipped with Samsung’s newly designed MJX controller along with the latest V-NAND architecture.
Samsung's 860 EVO and PRO is a welcome addition to the SATA SSD marketplace, but the class-leading endurance specification and faster controller are tempered by some apparent performance niggles. The 2.5-inch version I have on review here looks pretty much like any other SATA SSD, decked out in a black case. And while the M.2 and mSATA versions of the drive give the 860 Evo range flexibility.
The Samsung SSD 860 EVO is the newest of Samsung’s Client-PC SATA SSDs, specially designed for mainstream desktops and laptops. Building on the reputation of the Samsung SSD 850 EVO, the world’s first line of consumer SSDs with V-NAND 3bit MLC technology, the new Samsung SSD 860 EVO drives achieve industry-leading performance for SATA SSDs, offering improvements in speed, reliability, compatibility and capacity. The 860 EVO comes equipped with Samsung’s newly designed MJX controller along with the latest V-NAND architecture. Samsung, which first brought V-NAND technology to the market, continuously strives to improve product reliability and performance, even with the SATA interface limitations.
Powered by Samsung’s latest V-NAND technology, the 860 EVO delivers top-notch sequential read (up to 550 MB/s) and write (up to 520 MB/s) speeds and along with high sustainable performance for everyday computing experiences. As the amount of data processing continuously increases, the need for faster data transfers and sustainable high performance over longer periods of time has become paramount in importance for users. To address this need, Samsung has newly introduced Intelligent TurboWrite technology. With this, the 860 EVO provides significantly accelerated write performance which is up to 6 times longer than that of the previous 850 EVO.
- Innovative 3D V-NAND Technology
- Incredible Read/Write Performance
- Enhanced Endurance and Reliability
- Efficient Power Management
The 860 EVO provides multiple advanced data encryption features. Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) security technology will help keep data safe at all times. The 860 EVO includes an AES 256-bit hardware-based encryption engine to ensure that your personal files remain secure. Being hardware-based, the encryption engine secures your data without the performance degradation that you may experience with software-based encryption.
Speeds are consistent, even under heavy workloads and multi-tasking allowing for faster file transfer. The 860 EVO performs at sequential read speeds up to 550 MB/s* with Intelligent TurboWrite technology, and sequential write speeds up to 520 MB/s. The TurboWrite buffer size* is upgraded from 12 GB to 78 GB.The performance, warranty, and endurance specifications usually favor the EVO, but Samsung keeps the price close enough that most shoppers will spend a little more to get a superior product.
We’re promised read and write speeds up to 550/520MB/s and IOPS around 98K read and 90K write.
