The Gigabyte AB350-Gaming 3 looks to switch the focus in comparison to B350 competitors at this price point. Instead of focusing on maintaining a particularly strong power delivery solution and ample VRM cooling, Gigabyte instead invests in faster USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports, a better audio solution, and more SATA ports. Offered alongside those hardware features are Gigabyte’s crown jewel software features – RGB Fusion and Smart Fan 5.
The B350 chipset is a platform that could be seen as rather underwhelming. This is not though any fault of its own however but with consideration towards the under utilisation of the native USB 3.1 Gen2. GIGABYTE have finally restored our faith and we are happy to point out that the AB350-Gaming 3 does indeed feature 2x USB 3.1 G2 ports at the rear IO, with a total of 13 USB ports available (directly and indirectly via internal headers). Of these, 3x USB ports feature GIGABYTE's DAC-UP 2 adjustable voltage to ensure that your peripherals (and DAC's of course) are supplied with enough 'clean' power to ensure stable operation. We are pleased to report the inclusion of other GIGABYTE technologies such as Dual BIOS along with 'Ultra Durable' Metal Shielding and Anti-Sulfur resistors.
The Gigabyte GA-AB350-Gaming 3 motherboard uses an ATX form factor with a slightly less width measuring 305 x 230mm instead of 244mm like a typical ATX motherboard. The DIMM and PCI-E x16 slots are also equipped with a shiny “armor” reinforcement. On the right side edge is an obvious strip of LED and there are more outlining the audio area on the other side.
There are four DDR4 DIMM slots which support DDR4 memory up to 3200 MHz and are color-coded for dual channel operation. Along the far edge of the board is a clear plastic piece that will illuminate with RGB lighting when you have your system on. In front of that you have a 4-pin fan header, 24-pin ATX power connection and two SATA 6GB/s ports, which are facing up rather than being at a 90-degree angle coming out from the board.
Finally we move on to the rear I/O. From left to right you have a combination PS/2 port, two USB 3.0 ports, DVI-D and HDMI out, a single USB 2.0 port (USB DAC-UP), two USB 3.1 ports (type-A), two USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet (Realtek), and your audio connections. Gigabyte’s USB DAC-UP 2 continues to provide clean, isolated and low-noise power while adding the ability to compensate for voltage drop.
