The Prime Z270-A is one of Asus’ best motherboards. Its price plants it firmly in the mid-range, and its specification is extremely well-balanced – it doesn’t have the niche, high-end features that you’ll find on extreme-level boards, but it does include virtually every feature that mainstream users will need.
The black PCB is decorated with varying monochrome shades. The southbridge heatsink and the chunky shroud that covers the rear IO are both finished in white, with the memory slots and PCI sockets coated in shades of grey. The Prime toes the line between flashy and businesslike, and it looks very good indeed.
RGB LEDs are included, although this is a professional, grown-up board – so you’ll only find customisable lighting around the audio circuits, in the bottom-left corner of the PCB. Pleasingly, Asus has included a header that can be used with a lighting strip, and the whole lot can be customised in software.

In order to connect the very fastest data storage devices, the board comes with two M.2 slots for extreme NVMe M.2 SSDs, as well as six SATA 6G ports for 3,5" or 2,5" hard drives and SSDs (including RAID support). The M.2 ports are connected via four PCIe lanes on the 3.0 standard to the chipset and, in combination with the NVMe protocol, enable a data transfer rate of almost 4 GB/s. This allows M.2 PCIe SSDs to function up to eight times faster than SATA 6G SSDs! One of the particularly unique features of the ASUS PRIME Z270-A is its compatibility with the ASUS Aura RGB-LED lighting system as well as offering a header for RGB-LED lighting strips.
If no graphics card is available, the integrated GPU on the Skylake or Kaby Lake CPU allows for monitors to be connected directly to the rear of the motherboard - and both HDMI and DisplayPort connectors are available for improved connectivity. Internally the motherboard offers - among other functions – buttons to clear CMOS-, a TMP- and COM port header, four 4 pin headers for PWM fans, a 4 pin AiO header, a 5 pin Thunderbolt header as well as XMP support and an array of overclocking features.
ASUS does not cut corners on any of their boards with the Prime Z270 sharing similar power component circuitry as its higher tiered siblings, featuring a 10-phase digital power delivery system. ASUS integrated the following features into the Prime Z270-A board: six SATA 3 ports; two M.2 PCIe x4 capable ports; an Intel I219-V Gigabit NIC; three PCI-Express x16 slots; four PCI-Express x1 slots; on-board power and MemOK! buttons; an EZ XMP switch; Crystal Sound 3 audio subsystem; integrated DisplayPort, HDMI, and DVI video ports; and USB 3.0 and 3.1 Type-A and Type-C port support.

The Prime Z270-A's rear panel was enhanced with an integrated plastic cover plate and all the ports you've come to expect in an ASUS channel board, including USB 3.0 and 3.1 ports, a variety of video ports, and RJ-45 GigE port, and both digital and analogue audio ports.
