MSI's X299 GAMING PRO CARBON AC is second from the top when it comes to MSI's X299 motherboard lineup. The motherboard offers a very strong feature set, and a new level of customizability. The motherboard does not only have RGB LEDs built into the top and bottom of the PCB, but it has RGB LED headers and the ability to change the physical color of the heat sinks and shields.
The MSI X299 Gaming Pro Carbon AC was actually our first X299 motherboard in-house for the Skylake-X launch. We had an early ES sample using some unfinished styling that did the business for our review, but MSI sent us a retail version for a full analysis. This includes the removable plates on the heatsinks that MSI states can be replaced to aid in the aesthetic customisation of a system.
MSI actually provides silver and gold colored tops, and you can switch out the carbon fiber ones for the different colored tops to change the motherboard's overall appearance. The motherboard is aimed mostly at gamers, so we will look at it through that viewing glass.
The socket on the X299 Gaming Pro Carbon AC is a LGA2066 which has 55 more pins than its predecessor the LGA2011v3 socket that are found on X99 PCH motherboards. Even though the socket is physically bigger it supports the same CPU coolers as that of the LGA2011v3 so its easily compatible with most of the air and liquid coolers out there.
